Summary

Erich Kästner kennen viele nur als Autor von Kinder- und Jugendbüchern。 Dass er auch zeitkritische Romane geschrieben hat， wissen die wenigsten。 Der Roman Fabian entstand 1931 und beschreibt den moralischen und geistigen Verfall inmitten schwieriger politischer Verhältnisse。 Für Kästner gehen in dieser Zeit politischer und moralischer Verfall der Gesellschaft Hand in Hand。

Fabian ist ein arbeitsloser Germanist， der durch die Großstadt Berlin zieht auf der Suche nach Arbeit， auf der Suche nach Kontakten。 Wir erleben mit， wie er Menschen trifft， die ihn kaufen wollen， wie sich seine Freundin prostituiert， um Schauspielerin zu werden。 Sein bester Freund begeht Selbstmord wegen einer lächerlichen Bemerkung。 Ein Erfinder tritt auf， der seine Erfindungen， die Arbeitsplätze vernichtet haben， zurücknehmen will， was nicht geht。 Die Stadt ist in Auflösung begriffen， die Menschen leben wie in einem Irrenhaus， einem hoffnungslosen， unbarmherzigen Labyrinth。

Fabian ist ein Außenseiter， ein Moralist， seine Waffe ist die Beobachtung， die Distanz， die durch sarkastische Bemerkungen hergestellt wird。 Sein Anspruch besteht darin， zuzusehen， "ob die Welt Talent zur Anständigkeit hat"。 Kästner stellt dem Moralisten Fabian， ein Mensch übrigens， der moralisch integer ist， ohne dass ihm dies als Lebensentwurf bewusst ist oder er den Zeigefinger erhebt， menschliche Korrumpierbarkeit， Gewissenlosigkeit und Anpassung entgegen。 So finden sich im Buch eine ganze Reihe von wirklich gelungenen satirischen Spitzen， wie z。B。 eine Tombola， bei der Nahrungsmittel verlost werden oder eine Pöbelei von Menschen als Abendunterhaltung。 Kästners Beschreibungen der Menschen sind bissig und schonungslos。 Charakteristisch für die Moral der Menschen ist das Verhalten des Redakteurs Müntzer， der etwas unterstützt， an das er nicht glaubt und dessen Falschheit er durchschaut。 Von Müntzer heißt es， dass er sein Gewissen chloroformiert hat。

Fabian ist ein Roman mit vielen wirklich gelungenen zeitkritischen Beobachtungen， die auch heute nichts von ihrer Aktualität verloren haben。 Schließlich steht im Zentrum von Kästners Gesellschaftskritik die menschliche Schwäche， die Lethargie， genau um die Falschheit der Verhältnisse zu wissen， aber nichts dagegen zu tun -- und diese Kritik hat auch heute nichts von seiner Berechtigung verloren。 --Christoph Steven

A Moralist In Weimar BerlinThe German author Erich Kastner （1899 -- 1974） is primarily known for children's books and for poetry; but he deserves to be remembered as well for this short novel， "Going to the Dogs: The Story of a Moralist" （1931）， set primarily in Berlin during the Depression before the coming to power of the Nazis。The novel tells the story of Jacob Fabian， 32， and with a weak heart， a college graduate from a poor family unhappily employed at an advertising agency promoting the sa A Moralist In Weimar BerlinThe German author Erich Kastner （1899 -- 1974） is primarily known for children's books and for poetry; but he deserves to be remembered as well for this short novel， "Going to the Dogs: The Story of a Moralist" （1931）， set primarily in Berlin during the Depression before the coming to power of the Nazis。The novel tells the story of Jacob Fabian， 32， and with a weak heart， a college graduate from a poor family unhappily employed at an advertising agency promoting the sale of cigarettes。 He is a loner， single， and lives in a cheap rooming house。 After work， he wanders the streets of Weimar Berlin with his only friend， Labude， who has spent five years writing a dissertation on Lessing。 The friends visit nightclubs， brothels， and questionable artsy establishments while exchanging their opinions on many things。 Labude argues that economic improvement will better the condition of humanity， particularly with the poverty he sees around him， while Fabian argues that improvement will come only when individuals learn to think for themselves and to improve themselves morally。 As the story progresses， Fabian is discharged from his job while Labude discovers that his long term lady friend has been unfaithful。The novel offers a highly atmospheric portrayal of a troubled city losing itself in the quest for pleasure and sex。 Berlin and its streets and haunts are surrealistically portrayed with， as the author admits， satirical exaggeration and yet are convincing。 The book has a thick texture as many characters come and go。 The philosophers Descartes and Schopenhauer get discussed by the characters as does Lessing。 Overall， the feeling of the book is of sadness and loneliness as Fabian walks the streets， a flaneur， seeing the degeneration around him while realizing he lacks the ability to change the situation beyond expressing the hope for rationality。 Fabian describes himself as a spectator。 Upon its initial publication， the book was criticized for its many depictions of what Kastner termed "the anatomical differences between the sexes"。 The early versions of the book were bowlderized but the offending passages were restored in later editions and in this translation。 The book offers much room for thought and interpretation。 It is tempting to see the book politically as a tale of the conflict between communism and fascism in Weimar Germany resulting in the rise of Hitler。 The broader and more accurate reading， I think， sees the book as showing how individuals tend to run away from themselves and from trying to live reasonably。 There is a tendency to deny sexuality and "the anatomical differences" and yet to pursue sexuality blindly。 A sense of purposelessness and loneliness pervades the book much more than the sense of a political tract。 I think the book takes a more traditional view of gender and gender roles than the view which is held by many contemporary readers。This book is a provocative， troubling masterwork。 The New York Review of Books Classics series did a service by republishing the work in 2012。 Kastner's 1950 Preface to the German edition and his original Epilogue to the novel are included。 They are both eloquently written and helped me to think about this novel。Robin Friedman 。。。more

Fabian is one of the books that friends recommended to me， shortly after I had moved to Germany， as a book that's approachable for someone who is still learning German but wants to read something beyond children's literature。 I picked up a used copy， carried it around for several years as I moved from one apartment to the next， and now， long after leaving Germany， decided to finally read it in hopes that it would also serve well as something approachable to someone who already knows German but w Fabian is one of the books that friends recommended to me， shortly after I had moved to Germany， as a book that's approachable for someone who is still learning German but wants to read something beyond children's literature。 I picked up a used copy， carried it around for several years as I moved from one apartment to the next， and now， long after leaving Germany， decided to finally read it in hopes that it would also serve well as something approachable to someone who already knows German but whose fluency has been on a slow and steady course of atrophy over the past ten years。 In that sense it served its purpose reasonably well。Once I finished the book， though， I still had many conflicting feelings as to whether I really liked it。 Not a good sign。 It did have its moments; I did laugh out loud on occasion at the sheer absurdity of a scene and its dry， matter of fact narration。 The tragic twists of its plot were convincing。 If anything， what gave me the most pleasure was the ubiquitous presence of Berlin。 A large part of its narrative consisted of Herr Fabian's frenetic circumambulations through the city and its underside， enumerating many of its place names along the way -- its streets， its squares， its train stations， its landmarks and renown locales。 So many of these places immediately oriented me within the atlas of the narrative， even if it was just the the sound of a name that I hadn't thought of in over a decade that jolted me with more a sense of the familiar than my recollection of its precise position on the map， and even if many of those places named were completely erased from the maps generations before I ever arrived。 （Anhalter Bahnhof？ Oh， yes。 Now I remember， that magnificent limestone facade in the middle of an empty field， standing silent memorial to the destruction of the bombing campaigns during the second world war。）I have observed that many other （English language） reviews on GR compare Fabian to Isherwood's Berlin Stories， taking pains to note that Fabian was written by a "German writer，" as though that were a point of novelty。 I've also observed that the GR reviews of those who read Fabian in English translation tend regard the book more favorably than those with reviews written in German。 Now that I've meditated on it a bit， I think I can summarize the conflict in my feelings about the book。 Namely， however successfully Fabian captures the atmosphere of social disintegration， debauch， and economic doom during the twilight of the Weimar Republic， and however astute a portrait it paints of life in the capital during that time， none of its characters capture anything of a universal human appeal， nor does its rapid-fire prose seem to age well beyond the time in which it was written。 。。。more

Such an odd book。 It seemed at first that it was going to be wild and decadent times in interwar Germany。 There are brothels and orgies with lashings of melancholy。 We even have a street shoot-out between a Nazi and a Communist。 It's all going on and our hero Jacob Fabian seems relatively untouched。 But within the pages of this short novel Fabian's world is turned upside down。 The distance between doing just fine and utter desolation is very narrow。 Everyone is hustling to stay afloat， money is Such an odd book。 It seemed at first that it was going to be wild and decadent times in interwar Germany。 There are brothels and orgies with lashings of melancholy。 We even have a street shoot-out between a Nazi and a Communist。 It's all going on and our hero Jacob Fabian seems relatively untouched。 But within the pages of this short novel Fabian's world is turned upside down。 The distance between doing just fine and utter desolation is very narrow。 Everyone is hustling to stay afloat， money is both a trifle and the only necessary commodity， and the sacrifices necessary to ensure you have enough are occasionally tragic。 This felt like quite a Russian novella what with all the sadness and meaninglessness， but it also reminded me of Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut with its baffling sexuality and Candide-like central character。 Are we really supposed to believe that Fabian is a moralist。 He's certainly a lost soul， but I'm not sure it's the prevailing morality that does for him as much as the economic injustices that are as true today as they were in 1920s Germany。 。。。more

Wer noch nie Kästner jenseits vom Doppelten Lottchen gelesen hat: Los！Noch nie habe ich den Wahn（sinn） Berlins zwischen wilden Zwanzigern und Hitlers Machtübernahme so deutlich gespürt。 Und die Parallelen zu heute sind teils erschreckend。

This is not a cheerful book， but nor is it gloomy。 Perhaps the confusion is best cleared up but the explanation that the author is often accused of satire。 The prose is sharp and the chapters short。 The odds are you won’t want to start this unless you have always observed an absurdity and a certain spiralling to life already。。。 here surreal reality wins out in appropriate prose。

I wish I could give this book 10 stars。 I can confidently say that this is my favourite book。Set in Berlin during the late days of the Weimar republic， this book has it all:- A great original title （Der Gang Vor Die Hunde， meaning the "road to the dogs"） that was changed by the publisher to something more "friendly" and "commercial"- Vivid images of 1930s' Berlin- An equal sense of romance and decay- The feeling of the end of days- Funny moments， cause life is not tragedy， it's a comedy where ev I wish I could give this book 10 stars。 I can confidently say that this is my favourite book。Set in Berlin during the late days of the Weimar republic， this book has it all:- A great original title （Der Gang Vor Die Hunde， meaning the "road to the dogs"） that was changed by the publisher to something more "friendly" and "commercial"- Vivid images of 1930s' Berlin- An equal sense of romance and decay- The feeling of the end of days- Funny moments， cause life is not tragedy， it's a comedy where everyone is laughing to the misery of others。- Great political commentary， topped up with sparkling apathyThis book is 90 years old。 It could be 90 minutes old as well。 The world is fucked up， there is always a big divide between rich and poor， between conservatives/nationalists that blame the others for all that's wrong and progressivists that have no solid plan and between what the world could be and reality。 In the end， no matter what you think， you are wasting your life away。 Some just so it in the less popular or accepted way。 。。。more

Dies war eine Schullektüre in der 12。Klasse。 Es war ein Buch mit sehr viel Tiefgang und nahm Bezug zu vielen wichtigen Themen， die auch heute knapp 100 Jahre später immernoch von Bedeutung sind。 Als Schullektüre ließ es sich super und schnell lesen。 Manche Kapitel verstand man erst nach mehrmaligen Lesen， was allerdings nicht den normalen Lesefluss behinderte。Wenn ich dieses Buch nicht lesen hätte müssen， hätte es meine Aufmerksamkeit nicht auf sich gezogen。
